Roy “Leon”Maggard
Jan 1945 – Nov 2025
Roy “Leon” Maggard, 80, passed away at home surrounded by his family on Thursday, November 13, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Leon was born in Bradleyville, Missouri, on January 11, 1945, to Emery E. Maggard and Glenna Mae Johnson. Leon’s father passed away in August 1945 after which time his mother decided to move the family from Missouri to Selah, WA, to be near family. Leon graduated from Selah High School in 1962 and in 1965 he married Remi Mullinax; they had two children, Rhonda and Reo.
Leon was proud to serve during the Vietnam War and was in the 737th Army Reserve Transportation Unit. After his military service, Leon returned to work for Gilland & Son’s Trucking. On October 20, 1984, Leon married Fonda Garrison, and he gained two daughters, Marni and Shari. Leon finished his career at Simplot Foods and worked there for 25 years until his retirement in 2008.
After retirement, Leon and Fonda spent many winters in Arizona. They made several friendships, watched hours of baseball and enjoyed the warm weather. Leon loved the outdoors, bird watching, staying connected with his military unit, kept the most beautiful yard in the neighborhood and loved taking rides up into the mountains in his jeep. Most of all, his greatest joy was making memories with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. The most recent special memory was made this October when Leon, Fonda and their 4 children plus spouses, spent time at their favorite place, the Oregon coast.
Leon was preceded in death by his father, his mother, brother Bert Maggard and nephew Rodney Maggard. He is survived by his loving wife, Fonda, of 41 years, his sister’s Jeanette Estes and Delores Layton and younger brother Perry Hursh; his children Rhonda (Mark) Snyder, Reo (Marianne) Maggard, Marni (Roy) Ramos, and Shari (Mike) Beck; his grandchildren Britney (Patrick) Egger, Ashleigh Snyder, Bobby (Stephanie) Rehaume, Lyn Ramos, Alex Ramos, Caden Beck, and Ryan Beck; his great grandchildren Blake, Kooper, Brady, Avery, Madilynn, Emily and Claire.
His family will host a celebration of life open house on Saturday, November 22, 2025, from 1-4 p.m. at the family home in Othello - 532 S. 6th Ave, Othello, WA.
