Obituary of Elizabeth Lanning

Elizabeth “Betty” Lanning, age 92, of Othello, Washington, passed away March 4th, 2015, at Coventry House. She was born in Karlsruhe, North Dakota on June 20th 1922. She grew up with 12 other siblings in Karlsruhe, North Dakota. She was married to Harry K. Lanning on 10/25/1943. Together they lived in Pullman, Washington for a number of years, with their 3 children who were all born in Bremerton, Washington. They moved to Othello in 1953, where Harry, who was a carpenter, helped to build many homes and buildings in Othello. Betty began work as a waitress at Freddie’s Chinese Restaurant, and then went to work for Claire Weeks at the Steakhouse, which was at that time in the old Ballenger Motel. The Steakhouse later built a new restaurant, located at the corner of 7th and Main Street. She worked there for many years until her retirement. She was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, and joined the quilting circle at the Pilgrim Lutheran Church and quilted with them for several years. She had a passion for sewing, cooking, knitting, crocheting and gardening. She grew a large garden, many times canning much of the produce, and often sharing the harvest with friends, neighbors, and often donated to the food bank. She also loved to travel, and traveled extensively thru many countries in her 70’s and early 80’s. She was a strong woman who loved her family and church and she will be missed. She is survived by her 3 Children; Richard (Joan) Lanning of Kirkland, Washington, Rita (John) Carter of Knoxville, Tennessee, and Ruth (Larry) Vanaken of Hillsboro, Oregon, one Sibling, her brother Bennie (Sally) Mosser of Minot, North Dakota, her Sister in Law Lorretta Mosser of Minot, North, Dakota, a Sister in Law, Beulah Lanning of Rapid City, South Dakota, and a Brother in Law, Andy Deibert also of Minot, North Dakota. She also leaves behind 7 Grandchildren and 5 Great Grandchildren and many, many nieces and nephews and their families. Betty is preceded in death by her parents, Ben and Ottilia Mosser, her husband, Harry K. Lanning, and 11 of her siblings, 5 Brothers; Mike, Steve, Wendelin, Tony, and Richard Mosser, and 5 Sisters; Francis Heilman, Theresa Deibert, Veronica Schiele, Margaret Mc Leod, and Helen Hilzendager. A visitation will be held from 2:00pm to 4:00pm, on Thursday, March 12th, at Stevens Funeral Chapel in Othello, Washington. Catholic Mass will be held at 10:00 am on Friday, March 13th, 2015, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with burial to follow at Bess Hampton Memorial Gardens, a lite lunch will be served at Sacred Heart preceding the burial.
