Obituary of Robert William Grate

Robert William Grate, age 55, passed away August 8, 2016. He was born in Eureka, CA on August 8, 1961. He was married to Lisa Ladanyi-Grate on March 8, 2003 in Reno, NV. Robert loved the Lord and loved his family, always wanting to provide the absolute best. Robert was a self-employed contractor with a craftsmanship as a builder that exceeded the extraordinary. He was a hard worker and a big dreamer, and included his family in the work and the fun. Over Christmas break, he’d even have his kids out laying pipe in the frozen tundra of eastern Washington to get done what needed to be done. There wasn’t anything that Robert set his mind to that he could not accomplish. He completed what many only dreamed of doing, and he always did it in a BIG way. He could solve the most complex problems with the simplest solutions. Robert was hilarious, stubborn as a mule, beyond generous, loving, devoted and pure. His positivity was contagious. He never wore his emotions on his sleeve and always dealt with the facts of any given situation. His children are forever grateful to Robert for the love he showed to their mother, Lisa, and the rest of their large family. He was patient and kind, and valued the little things in life, but wasn’t afraid to go big, which he often did! Robert had a passion for the outdoors, especially the Pacific coast. He enjoyed crabbing, fishing, water skiing, snow skiing and camping. Not only did he share his life passions with all of his children, he lived them with his children through many incredible family trips. Some cherished memories were camping in style at Lake Mendocino and boating in Moses Lake, where he loved to take the kids and their friends flying through the air on a tube, holding on for dear life! Other great memories Robert has left his family include riding rollercoasters through Disney World, witnessing the infamous Moses Lake Destruction Derby, sledding in the snow, traveling and sharing lavish meals. Robert was a man of values with a big heart, a gentle soul, and a sweet mustache! He gave all he had unconditionally, expecting nothing in return. Robert wasn’t one to yell and show disappointment and never used profanity. He was very proud and supportive of his children and was there for them in the little moments and important events of life. He was a father and grandfather to all his children and grandchildren in the best way he knew how to be. He embraced his grandchildren with huge hugs and warm smiles. He referred to his granddaughters as babies, not matter what their age was, and his grandsons were there to live out his legacy of fun and hard work. He exposed them to an adventurous way of life that always brought them great excitement and made them feel special. His legacy will live on through the beliefs and values he instilled within each of them, the memories made, and the joy he shared. He will be missed by his family every day. "Thank you Robert for showing us how to love and live life to the fullest. Did we tell you today that we love you? Robert you were loved dearly by your family and now may your soul rest in peace in the Heavens with our Lord where no pain nor suffering prevails. Even in darkest of times Robert, you always embraced the light with a smile. Honey you were, and always will be, the love of my life. Honey you gave me, our children, our grandchildren, and our friends more than anyone ever has in my life time. May peace be with you my love until we hold hands again in Heaven." - The Love of Your Life, Me. Robert is survived by his mother, Carolyn Grate of Othello, WA; sister Barbara Daily of Othello, WA; nephews and niece Patrick, Aaron, and Kaycie of Othello, WA; his uncle and aunt, Dennis and Claudia Grate of Eureka, CA; the love of his life, Lisa Ladanyi-Grate of McKinleyville, CA; and children: Randy Grate (Deidre Barn) of Cottonwood, CA; Ryan Grate of McKinleyville, CA; Jed Hunter (Michelle Hansen) of McKinleyville, CA; Tyley Hunter (Hannah DiTullio) of Portland, OR; Stacey Magana (Jairsinho Magana) of McKinleyville, CA; Brandon Dolson (Felicia Saville) of Winnetka, CA; Doran Atherton (Allison Atherton) of Monterey, CA; Vanessa Hunter (Matt Corrow) of Sacramento, CA; and Alisha Hunter of Mckinleyville, CA.
